“It looks like somebody has a case of the ‘Mondays!’” It’s a line from a cheesy movie that came out more than a decade ago. The main character was struggling with finding the will to go to work and get anything done. He hated his job, and was definitely searching for something more in life. So, he went to a coffee shop before work and was confiding in the waitress about how much he loathed his work, his boss, his life. I think we can relate.
On the weekends, woohoo! We get to do what we want (for the most part), relax, shift our focus, and basically blow off steam. We enjoy time with family and friends. We get to worship together at our church service. We get to go do outdoor recreation, catch a sports game, movie, or TV show we’ve been wanting to see. Then comes Monday.
In real life, there are many of us that dread Mondays. It’s the beginning of the workweek for most of us. For others, it’s another day of classes and homework. There’s a lot to do, and much of it may not be particularly fun. It’s the start of a five-day struggle to get things done, earn a paycheck, pass a class, or just plain survive.
Here’s the problem. Life wasn’t made to loathe. It wasn’t made to just get by. Life was made for us to thrive! We are meant to be joyful that we even have life. In fact, our verse today makes it very plain, “This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” We are supposed to rejoice on Mondays? Really? How can we be glad on a Monday? Because Jesus Christ is still our Lord and Savior, and He reigns supreme over the universe. That’s why.
In fact, it doesn’t matter the day, hour, minute, or second. We have a reason to be joyful. Our God woke us up this morning. We have life. We have His unending, unconditional love. We have His power living inside of us, carrying us through the day. We have an amazing church family that loves us, supports us, and prays for us. We have our sins forgiven minute-by-minute and a Savior that cheers us on throughout the day. (Did you know He’s your biggest fan? It’s true.)
So, today, and every day, praise God. Be joyful and glad for the day He has given you. Even if it is a Monday.
