For nothing will be impossible with God. ~ Luke 1:37 (ESV)
As we move deeper into the Christmas season, the story of Jesus’s birth must reign supreme. It was, after all, the greatest birth in the history of humanity. Of course, the Holy Spirit played a huge role in making it all come about. He was the one who planted the seed inside Mary’s womb that would bring our Savior to the world in just nine months.
Imagine receiving that message – the Savior is coming. In fact, God sent down an angel to deliver this news to Mary herself. Can you imagine having an angel delivering such news? Of course, Mary’s heart would have been flooded with joy, gladness, and all of the things an expectant mother usually experiences, and of course, on a grander scale, since she was going to birth the Messiah! However, what happens after the message sets in a few days or weeks later?
Mary had to endure a great deal of hardship in her life. Never mind the fact that she was most likely only a teenager, she was pregnant and unmarried. Her villagers looked upon her as some sort of immoral woman for sleeping around and getting herself pregnant. The community would look at her son, not as their Savior, but as a bastard child (born out of wedlock). Kids would ridicule him. People would look at her with sideways glances. As Jesus got older, people made fun of him for daring to call himself the Son of God. They mocked his teachings and refused to accept him for who he truly was. Of course, the religious elite were always out to get him; finally succeeding by murdering him on the cross. Yes, Mary’s blessing could have also felt like a curse.
However, the parting words the angel spoke to Mary before he returned to Heaven, I think, were what would carry her through much of her difficulties. He said, “For nothing will be impossible with God.” It was a reminder that even though Satan would hit her with doubt, anguish, and so much heartache, that God would see her through it. And He did. She was there to witness the risen Savior. The impossible became possible by the power of the Holy Spirit.
No matter what issues or hardships you may face in life, cling to God. Cling to the King of Kings. His promises always come true, even when it seems like it is impossible for them to do so. Mary’s promise is our promise. Nothing will be impossible with God.
