When I was a teenager, I used to hate it when older people told me what to do. It wasn’t just me. They would speak to us collectively at school, often times as a group. Sometimes they’d sit us all down and lecture us on proper clothing options. Other times, they’d call us all together to inform us on the disciplinary procedures that would take place if we were caught cheating. Then, of course, there were the seminars on proper relationship etiquette. (What was allowed, and what was not. The focus was generally on the not part.) As with most teens, I would have one of two reactions: I’d nod my head in agreement, while internally saying, “Yeah, whatever!” Or, I’d roll my eyes so that everyone else in the group could see that I wasn’t buying what they were selling. Either way, I didn’t like it when other people got up in my business.
Then, something magical happened. I graduated high school, then college. Suddenly, I found myself counted among the “old people.” I started to gain not just knowledge in my life, but wisdom. You see, knowledge is gained through careful study of a subject. Wisdom is gained by experience. As I grew older, I had more experiences. With more experiences came new insights into life. You know what I learned? The old people were mostly correct. As I experienced more and more of life, I came to realize that they had wisdom in certain areas that I certainly did not when I was a teenager.
Of course, there is none older than our God. He is eternal, so the word old doesn’t even really apply. Imagine the wisdom that a perfect being, who has literally been around forever, has within His existence. He knows everything about everything. There is no option He hasn’t considered. He is the master of wisdom.
Because He loves us so much, He seeks to share His wisdom with us. He doesn’t do it to prove His superiority (though He could). He does it because He desires that we have the best life possible. So, how does He share His wisdom? In His Word, the Bible. To keep this simple: You want wisdom? Get into the Word. But, it’s not just enough to read it. You must follow it to receive the blessings God has in store for you.
