Political Worship

O Lord our God, others have ruled us, but you alone are the one we worship. ~ Isaiah 26:13 (NLT)

In this day and age, it’s hard to escape politics. It is seemingly everywhere. Whether in newspapers (yes, they still exist), magazines, on television, or the Internet, politics are plastered across all of our media outlets. Newscasts feature a large helping of senators, congressmen, and members of the president’s team, including the president himself. Our nation seems to be obsessed with politics.

In addition to those who hold political office, there are professional political pundits (people who specialize in evaluating politics). These experts are regularly interviewed for print media or television in order to help us, the public, make sense of the political landscape of our country. Of course, these pundits generally have an agenda that skews their opinions one way or another. Additionally, the news media seem to seek out the ones that have the most extreme views to provide commentary to us.

There are also political “experts” that spend all day and night on their social media, blog, or other communication avenues blasting one side of the political spectrum or another. I see this every day on my various social media feeds.

What’s the result of all of this? It seems our nation is deeply fracturing into groups of people pushing a political agenda. Unfortunately, Christians are not immune to this fracturing. In fact, dare I say that many people worship politics rather than the God of the universe.

Here is where our verse today comes into play. As the prophet Isaiah states, “O Lord our God, others have ruled us, but you alone are the one we worship.” In our country, politics has become something to be worshipped in an effort to make our country legislate morality and righteousness. Therefore, a lot of people dedicate more time to politics than to God. Since we worship what we put our focus on, we’ve made politics a religion.

Rulers, politicians, will come and go. But the Lord our God reigns forever. He alone is morally good. He alone is righteous. He alone is worthy of our worship. May we all spend more time worshipping Him, rather than fighting over politics.
