I am a nerd. I know, shocking, right?! One of my favorite games to play on Xbox is Farming Simulator. Yes, you read that right. I like to play a game which allows me to be a virtual farmer. In that world, I get to use some incredible pieces of equipment to plant, maintain, and harvest various crops. The trick is planting crops at the right time so that when I harvest them, I can get top price for the crop when I take it to the seed wholesaler.
One of the major things to do to ensure a good crop is to plow and cultivate your field before planting. This is basically taking a tractor with a big piece of equipment which puts large metal blades into the ground and, as you pull it, it digs into the dirt and turns it over. This makes the soil soft and get rocks out of the way. Why does this need to be done? So that the roots of the crop will grow down into the soil and thrive. Because, of the soil is too hard, or is full of rocks just below the surface, the crop won’t take and will whither and die.
Plowing a field is a really slow process to do right. You drive the tractor quite slowly, ensuring the plow digs in nice and deep into the dirt. Go too fast (trying to take a shortcut) and the blades just skip over the surface. In other words, it takes time to get things just right for a healthy crop to grow. It’s the same when it comes to our spiritual life.
If we want a vibrant, true, strong life of faith in Jesus, we need to work at it. We need to constantly be working on our lives to prepare them for the calling and blessings Jesus wants to bestow upon them. When we do this, our roots grow strong into Christ, and our faith grows. As the apostle Paul put it, “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
So today, and every day, keep preparing our life to serve Jesus. Let the roots of your faith grow deep into the life of Jesus. Let the harvest of your life be full, bountiful, amazing. Work at it. Dig deep and let God do amazing things in you and through you.
