For we live by believing and not by seeing.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NLT)
Late at night, when everyone else is asleep, they are lurking. Buried deep, expertly camouflaged, they prepare for their evil deeds. They work best in the cover of darkness so that they may pounce upon their prey without hesitation. Their attack is swift, painful, and often in tandem with other members of their team. I have experienced the fullness of their wrath. It is not a pain I wish on anyone. No, I’m not talking about a team of special forces soldiers. I’m talking about Legos, of course.
My son Nathan loved playing with Legos when he was younger. He had a big blue bin that he toted around the house which contained all of the necessary ingredients to create what his mind imagined. Of course, like most boys or girls that play with Legos, he wasn’t particularly good at cleaning them up off the floor when his project was finished. (He still isn’t, actually.)
I remember vividly one night when everyone else was asleep, I finished watching the news, turned out the lights, and headed upstairs to my bedroom for some shut-eye. Everything was going well until I reached the top of the stairs. A tiny corner of a Lego block, unseen by me, embedded itself into the soft underside of my foot. The pain was excruciating. I hopped away from the assault only to land on another one, then another, and so on. The attack continued until I was writhing on the floor, cursing Lego and their treachery.
Ever since that episode, I’m a lot more careful as I walk through our home in the dark. Who knows what lurks just out of sight? Though I can’t see them, I know they are there.
Just because we can’t see something doesn’t mean doesn’t exist. It’s true with Legos, and it’s also true when it comes to God. There is evidence all around us of His existence. And, for those of us who have encountered Him, we never forget that He is there (Or we shouldn’t forget.) Thankfully, our relationship with the God of the universe is loving and joy-filled, unlike the pain and misery of the Lego incident.
As our verse today states, “For we live by believing and not by seeing.” Today, and every day, pray that God will reveal Himself more and more to you. Pray that your faith will grow, even though you can’t see Him. And then it’s your turn – believe.
