Absolutely Maybe

For the word of God will never fail.

While I was in college, I once went to a car dealership looking to trade in my Ford Escort GT (Not a good car) for a Honda Civic (a great car). I found exactly what I was looking for, a Honda Civic hatchback with a reasonable amount of miles on the odometer. Additionally, the asking price was just slightly above the value of my Ford Escort. The car salesman told me that the car needed to go out and get tuned up and detailed (cleaned inside and out). He assured me that it would be ready in a couple of days and we would make a deal then. A couple of days later, the car was still not available. The salesman said it would be a couple more. So I waited. A few days later, I called – still no car. Then the salesman said something that absolutely floored me. He said, “I guarantee that I will absolutely maybe have the car for you tomorrow.” I’m not making this up. He said “absolutely maybe.” Needless-to-say, they lost my business.

Have you ever had someone make a promise to you that they did not keep? It’s not the greatest feeling in the world to believe that someone is going to do something and then they totally bail on you. It not only hurts feelings, it also erodes trust.

The beauty of God’s word is that it never fails. In fact, when we look through the Bible, we see God make thousands of promises to people: Noah’s Ark, the exodus out of Egypt, the rise and fall of kings and kingdoms, the Son of God would come down to save us, and on and on. These promises are often times called prophesy, because they tell us what will happen in the future and then, boom, it happens!

The amazing thing is that every time God promises something, He delivers on it. His word never fails. Why? Because He is holy, perfect, amazing, loving, caring, sovereign, and so many other adjectives. God’s not into playing games or making a sale. Instead, He is interested in us. He is interested in our present and our future. So, when He promises something to us, He will deliver.

Today, claim the promises of God in your life. Claim the salvation He offers. Claim the grace He freely gives for those times we fail. Claim the love of God. Claim the promise of an eternity with our Lord and Savior.
