You Want Me to Do What?

The LORD will work out his plans for my life — for your faithful love, O LORD, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me. ~ Psalm 138:8 (NLT)

Maybe you’re like me and you have that one friend who is always asking you to do some crazy stuff (or maybe you are that friend). Whether it is TP-ing someone’s house (Do people still do that?), taking an impromptu road-trip, or going cow-tipping, there’s always that one person who makes life so much more interesting.

In my experience, God is that friend. No, He’s not generally asking me to do stuff which may get me arrested by a cop or shot by a farmer. But, when God asks me to do stuff, I generally return to Him with the question, “You want me to do what?” Such was the case with one young lady who many had given up on. She was in high school and didn’t have a lot of friends because she was anti-social –she would actually growl at people. One day, I saw her eating lunch by herself at the school, which was a normal occurrence, and God spoke to me, “Go have lunch with her.” After a few “are you serious?” questions of my own, I begrudgingly grabbed my lunch and headed over to her. Let’s just say there wasn’t much conversation; just awkwardness. Each day after that, God pushed me to eat at her table. After months of this, we developed a good friendship (which still exists today). Eventually, she let me into her life and I was able to share Jesus with her. She had a lot of questions, which was awesome. After a lot of awkward moments, I had the pleasure of baptizing this young woman.

God will ask you to do some stuff which will be intimidating, scary, or just downright awkward. As our verse today puts it, “The LORD will work out his plans for my life — for your faithful love, O LORD, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me.” In other words, when you surrender your life and become a Christ follower, He gets to plot your course in life. And, that course will be bizarre at times. Here’s my advice: Embrace the awkward.

When we embrace the path God plots for us, when we embrace the awkward, we get to participate in the miracles which God works every day. He allows us to be a part of His plan of salvation for those who are lost. So, stop protesting by saying “You want me to do what?” and start giving thanks for the opportunities to experience the awesome power of Jesus.
