Misrepresentation

For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. ~ Psalm 33:4 (NLT)

When I was in college, there was a huge number of students who needed to take a second language course in order to graduate. In fact, there were so many students who needed such a class that they had to hire an additional teacher to help with the load. So, they interviewed a bunch of candidates and settled on one man who was supposed to be an expert in teaching Spanish. I was enrolled in his class.

He represented himself as a great teacher. On the first day of class, he told us all of his qualifications. He tried to wow us with the fact that he would be the best teacher we had ever experienced. There was just one, small problem. He had no clue how to teach. His classes generally consisted of him writing sentences in Spanish and then attempting to translate them into English. Because, while he could speak both languages, he couldn’t actually write them; which is kind of a big piece of language classes in college. He would stumble over his words and get frustrated. He would sometimes just stare at the chalk board trying to figure out what he was supposed to do. He lasted about two weeks before he was fired.

Often times people represent themselves as something they are not. They are experts, they are knowledgeable, they are trustworthy, they are your friend. While they say all of these things, their actions betray them. It turns out that how they represent themselves is not actually who they are. They are a fraud. So, we lose trust in people.

When it comes to God, our jadedness sometimes carries over to our view of Him. Sure, on paper (in the Bible), He looks great! But, is He actually who He says He is? Our verse today captures this question and provides an answer, “For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does.” In other words, not only does God look great on paper, but His actions, what He does, backs up the truth found there.

No matter what this world displays, you can always trust God. Sure, you may not always understand His motives for doing things, or even what He is doing until He is done, but when we look at His track record for following through on His promises, He has a 100 percent success rate. He really is who He says He is.
