“Pastor Chad. I don’t think God likes me.” I was stunned at what I had just heard. But, I could tell the person was being real and authentic with me. They truly believed that God didn’t like them. They believed that God saw them as hopeless, a lost cause, damaged goods. Through their tears, I could see the heartbreak they were experiencing because they really believed that God had turned His back on them and was choosing to push them away. I can tell you, that this person is not the only one who feels this way.

Satan (which means accuser) tries to paint a picture of God that shows Him as an evil, spoiled brat who will torment people if He doesn’t get His way. In Satan’s lies, He tries to tell us that God will bully us until we stand up to Him; and then, once we’ve done it, God will leave us to fend for ourselves because He no longer has a use for us. You may be shaking your head at this statement, but millions of people around the world have fallen for this lie. They truly believe that God hates them. The only way to defeat a lie is to combat it with truth.

King David, who knew a thing or two about going through rough times in life, penned this amazing verse, which sets the record straight about God, “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!” This is the same David who was a liar, adulterer (he slept with another man’s wife), and murderer. If ever someone should be susceptible to the lie of Satan, you would think it would be David. But, David never lost track of the truth. Even in our brokenness, God loves us.

The truth about God is quite simple, really. When He thinks of you, He smiles. Yes, even when you’ve just messed up – He smiles. Why? Because when He thinks of you, when He sees you, it brings joy to Him. God not only loves you; He actually likes you! You are precious to Him!

So, today, and every day, practice some positive self-speak. When Satan tries to knock you down with his lies, focus your thoughts on this truth. When Satan tries to convince you that you’re too broken for God to love, remind yourself of how Jesus sees you. Meditate on this one truth day and night: I am a child of God, and He loves me, He likes me, and He is Saving me.
