For the word of the LORD holds true, and we can trust everything he does.
Psalm 33:4 (NLT)
Trust is something that is difficult these days. Who can we trust? We have one news outlet reporting one thing, and another reporting the same thing, but with a different message, and a third reporting that the thing the other two news stations covered didn’t even really happen. We have Internet hoaxes that tell stories about things that troll people into giving up their information, or stealing their money. We have made up information floating through cyberspace that is passed on by millions of people as if it is fact. Celebrities are being shown to be truly hypocritical in their outrage against one thing, but their acceptance of other things. Conspiracy theorists spin crazy tales about governments, the church, and other institutions. The list goes on and on about the people we can’t turn to receive pure truth.
Notice this list is all about man-made sources. Humanity is the source of misinformation (as a result of our sinful nature) when we believe that lying, cheating, and stealing to get what we want is somehow justified. The result has been a complete erosion of trust in society.
However, we have this verse today that states, when it comes to God, “we can trust everything he does.” That’s a pretty bold statement! How can we trust everything?
It’s pretty simple. Trust is built by looking at someone’s track record. Let me break that down into simple terms. Over the course of their history, have they consistently told the truth and always done the right thing? For us humans, this can be a tough question because we’re all flawed. But, for God, He is flawless. So, let’s look at His history to see if He is trustworthy. Created the heavens, earth, and everything else? Check. Offered, and offers, grace and forgiveness to everyone who turns to Him? Yup! (David, Abraham, Samson, etc.) Put His life on the line to prove His love for us? Indeed! Never turned anyone away who truly wanted a relationship with Him? True again! Always told the truth, even if it was not going to be received well? Believe it! For thousands of years, God has shown us that He is trustworthy.
In life, it’s pretty straight forward. Put your trust in God. Trust Him with your emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Trust Him in relationships and careers. Trust Him with everything in your life. Trust Him with your salvation. He has truly proven Himself trustworthy.
