I realized that no one can discover everything God is doing under the sun. Not even the wisest people discover everything, no matter what they claim. ~ Ecclesiastes 8:17 (NLT)
In August, I will have been married to my wife Michelle for 25 years. It’s hard to believe it has been that long! When I stop to think about it, on our anniversary, I will have been in a relationship with Michelle longer than I have lived life without her. We got married when I was 23 and we dated for three years before we got married. It’s been quite the journey full of twists, turns, victories, losses, and many, many changes. But, I can’t imagine going through life without her.
One of the most curious things I’ve discovered in marriage is that no matter how long we’ve been married, I’m still discovering new things about my wife. Even after nearly 28 years of relationship, I still don’t know everything about her. Whether it’s little quirks in her personality, or tastes in movies, or even preferences when it comes to going out to eat or on vacation, I generally learn new stuff about her as we journey together. Throw in a couple of kids and a crazy dog or two and I learn more about her parenting style, her love for animals, her patience for all of us, and a million other things. The best part of the journey is continually discovering more about this amazing woman that God has given me as a partner in life.
But, being married 25 years is just a drop in the bucket compared to some of my friends. They’ve been married over 60 years! Though, they most likely know their partner on a much more detailed level than I know my own, they would say the same thing – they are still discovering what makes their partner in life tick.
Our relationship with God is similar (minus the romantic overtones). When we accept Jesus as our Savior, our learning about God isn’t complete, it’s just beginning. It’s like our wedding day. And, as we join in partnership with God, He desires a journey with us. As we journey, we learn more and more about who God truly is, and who He made us to be. The longer the journey, the more we discover. The more we discover, the more our faith grows.
Every day, spend time with God. Learn what makes Him tick. Discover who He made you to be. Learn just how much He loves you.
