El Capitan

Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock.

Isaiah 26:4 (NLT)

I had the privilege of going to a summer camp which offered rock climbing as one of the weekly camp options. That may not sound too amazing until you realize that this summer camp was located inside Yosemite National Park, and the cliffs we would be climbing were some of the most sought after, and most beautiful, locations in the world. People from all nations fly into Yosemite to experience its beauty, and, for rock climbers, a chance to scale some of the most famous rock faces in the world. One of those rock faces is known by its Spanish name, El Capitan, which translates to “The Captain,” or the “Top Dog” if you will.

The Captain, a granite megalith, rises from the Yosemite Valley floor a staggering 3,000 feet. For most rock climbers, it takes a couple of days to climb it. Believe it or not, this means that they are forced to sleep while suspended in the air from the rock. They do this by anchoring ropes into the cracks in the granite which then holds a small platform where they and their sleeping bag are tethered in for a good night’s sleep. They put their full faith in their equipment to keep them safe while they slumber. Yeah, it’s a bit scary. Then there are the men and women who are so spectacularly good at the sport that they can scale the 3,000 foot face in one day. There have even been a handful of people who have climbed it without ropes!

I had the pleasure of standing at the base of El Capitan several times in my life. Though I’ve never had the opportunity to climb it, I can tell you that it is awe-inspiring looking up the cliff face, the sky as its background. It is massive, and towers above everything else in the valley. However, it pales in comparison to the Eternal Rock.

You see, while El Capitan stands tall here on Earth, the Bible tells us that God, Jesus is the “Eternal Rock.” As the prophet Isaiah put it in our verse today, ‘Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock.” However, this rock is different than The Captain. You see, this Rock is above all the earth, above the universe, above all things. There is nothing more superior in its splendor, majesty, and awesomeness. The Eternal Rock stands above it all. He cannot be measured by human understanding, nor can he be conquered by anyone. The Eternal Rock stands forever as our Lord, Savior, and Messiah.
