Getting Stood Up

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?

Numbers 23:19 (NLT)

Have you ever been stood up? For those that don’t know what being “stood up” means, here ya go: It simply means that the person who promised to meet you at a particular place at a particular time didn’t. It’s not that they were late. They never showed up.

There have been countless movies and TV shows that use this concept in their stories. The main character shows up for a date, for example, and their counterpart blows them off because of some excuse or another. The person is left wondering what happened. Often times, it’s a huge blow to their self-esteem, and they begin to think that maybe it was something they did or said that convinced their date not to show up. It’s a great storyline to illicit sympathy from the audience.

However, the reason it’s a great storyline is because most of us can relate to it. Maybe we haven’t been stood up on a date. But, I’m sure most, if not all, of us can think of a time when someone rejected us, or made us feel less valued. It hurts when people say one thing and then don’t follow through on it.

That’s why I love this quote from Moses in the book of Numbers (of all places). In speaking of God, Moses stated, “Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” In other words, it’s a reminder for all of us about the nature and character of God. God always follows through on what He says He is going to do. He shows up on time and ready to go.

There is no greater evidence than God in flesh, Jesus. The prophecies (predictions about the future) predicted that Jesus would heal the sick, make the blind see, the lame to walk. He did all those things. The prophecies also said that He would live a perfect life, and then lay it down on the cross for the forgiveness of all our sins. Then, three days later, He would rise from the dead, conquering the grave for us. Check. Check. Check.

God doesn’t ever stand us up when He promises something. He will follow through. He will show up. He will act. Always. One hundred percent of the time.
