Let Him Lead

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5 (NLT)

“Follow your heart. Trust your instincts. Let your feelings lead you.” These are all expressions that have been stated, and restated, millions of times across the globe. The idea is that our emotions, our feelings somehow have great wisdom to impart upon us. You couldn’t possibly feel emotionally attached to someone without falling in love with them, right? Your first impression of people is always spot-on, correct? Following my feelings has never led me to get my heart broken. Yeah, right. I think we can all agree that we’ve made decisions based on our emotions, or feelings, and things turned out poorly. (If you can’t just give it time.)

How can thousands of movies, TV shows, books, magazines, and blogs be wrong? I mean, the people behind this information surely know what they’re talking about, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to sell their product to us, right? If we just do what our emotions dictate, according to popular culture, life will be good, everything turns out right, and every one of our dreams will be fulfilled. Except, there’s one, small problem here. It doesn’t work that way.

God gave us brains to think and reason. We aren’t mindless zombies just trying to fulfill our basic wants. We are given the ability to think things through, analyze the data, and make informed decisions. Unfortunately, we’re pretty good about shutting that part of our lives off.

So, God does something only He can do. He gives us the Holy Spirit who will lead us. And, the best part is that He’s always, always, correct. We just have to listen to Him.

“But, I can’t hear Him,” some will say. To that I have two answers: 1) Have you put your faith in God? If not, then of course you won’t be listening for Him. 2) You hear Him just fine. You just don’t like the way He is leading, or the answer His is giving. It’s that small voice in your head that is saying something isn’t right.

King Solomon (we’ve talked about Him before) had great wisdom. But, notice, even he states that His wisdom, His emotions, his heart, lead him into trouble. Instead, in his wisdom, he states that we must trust God with everything.

Your challenge today: Let Him lead.
