Confident Heart

My heart is confident in you, O God; my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises!

Psalm 57:7 (NLT)

In the sports world, there are a few things in order to be successful. The first being that you have good coordination. If you can’t run 50 feet without tripping over your own shoes, sports may not be your strong suit. Second, you must dedicate time to practice. Athletes aren’t born, they are made. Those that rise to the highest level of sports spend hours each day practicing their craft. Third, a really good athlete has good confidence. For example, a basketball player that is truly on his or her game truly believes the ball is going in the hoop before their shot even leaves their hand. There is no fear in what they do.

Confidence isn’t usually something we pick up immediately. It must be combined with experience. The reason a truly gifted athlete is so confident is because they’ve seen that same shot go through the net a million times before during practice and in games. There is trust that they can, and will, make the shot. Confidence in God is also built over time, with experience.

There is no doubt that King David (he’s the one who wrote this psalm) had a lot of experiences. There were many highs and lows in David’s life. The lows were a result of his confidence in himself (the whole Bathsheba incident). The highs were a result of his confidence in God (Goliath was dropped by a single stone).

Much like David, we must learn from our experiences. As we do, we will notice that God never fails. Every shot He takes He makes. Every promise He gives, He fulfills. Everything He asks us to do in life is perfectly correct. He makes no mistakes.

Where we place our confidence when it comes to God is of extreme importance. When we become confident in our own abilities, intelligence, strength, and emotions, we will fall to our knees in defeat. When we put our confidence, our trust, in God we will fall to our knees to worship Him in victory – singing praises to God.

Today, and every day, sing and give praise to God for all that He has done. Pray that you will have the confidence in Him to follow wherever He leads. Pray a prayer of surrender.  Lay down your own desires and, instead trust in His. Worship Jesus because He is worthy.
