Value

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. ~ Philippians 3:8 (NLT)

I remember when I got my first flip-phone. For those of you who don’t remember them, they are the cell phones which folded in half. So, when you took it out of your pocket, you would flip the top half up to make the phone full size. The flip-phone was the big thing back in the day. Everyone wanted one, and nearly everyone had one. Then, something happened – the Blackberry.

The Blackberry took phone ownership to a whole new level. Why? It had some apps on it. You could now have a calendar and email which synced with your favorite service. In other words, you could do business right from your phone! Suddenly, flip-phones were out, and Blackberry devices were everywhere! And, it reigned supreme as the it cellphone for quite some time. Then in 2007, the world changed. The first iPhone came out.

The iPhone boasted a slick new design and a touch screen. You no longer pushed buttons; you tapped the screen to make things happen. Plus, it had a ton of new apps which allowed you to do all new cool stuff in addition to the email and calendar functions. As a result, the Blackberry faded into nothingness within a few short years.

The world of technology changes super-fast these days. Every few years, or even months, something new comes out which makes all the other stuff, which was cutting edge a short time ago, become worthless. Those flip-phones? They’re only good for recycling. Blackberry? The brand doesn’t even really exist anymore. As this world moves along, the things which were once valuable become value-less. They have none.

Our verse today touches on this concept. While we have things we like, or enjoy, they will fade. There is no constant in the world. But there is one constant in the universe. Jesus is King. The apostle Paul wrote, “Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” In other words, hold on to what will always be valuable. An eternal, saving relationship with Jesus. The value will never fade. In fact, the longer you have it, the more valuable you will realize it is.
