Step Here

Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me. ~ John 12:26 (NLT)

In our last devo, we studied the first aspect of assuming the greatness which God has built you for: Surrender. Realize, please, that surrender isn’t a one-time thing. When you surrender, it is a daily, moment-by-moment thing. So, what are we surrendering to? Step 2.

We often times forget how far we’ve come in our life education. In Kindergarten, we are introduced to the alphabet. The next few years of grade school deal with words; followed by a few years of sentence structure. By the time we reach high school, we’re writing paragraphs of sentences. In college, we write a bunch of multi-page papers. Our ability to communicate in written language isn’t a product of just a few years. It takes decades to reach a level of maturity in our ability to communicate our thoughts well. We go step-by-step, building upon what we’ve learned before. It’s the same when it comes to learning about our destiny from God.

Jesus’s followers often referred to him by a term that we don’t use in the English language anymore (unless you’re Jewish): Rabbi. The word Rabbi simply means teacher, or professor for you college types. This word suits Him perfectly because He is not just Messiah and Savior, but He is also our teacher. So, how does He teach us about the Kingdom of God and our destiny within it? Step-by-step; building upon the lessons we’ve already learned.

When we surrender to God’s way of doing things, He begins with the simple lessons in life – the basics. Just like in school, we don’t get to move on to the next step until we’ve developed a good grasp on the current step. Oddly enough, this can feel frustrating to us. Why? Because we want to be doing the advanced stuff – you know, casting out demons, healing the sick, rescuing prisoners, etc. But, surrender means we have to move at God’s pace for us. Until He is satisfied that we’ve learned our lesson on whatever step He has us, He won’t move us on to the next. We must move at His pace. He knows best.

So today, and every day, whatever step God has you on, be satisfied with knowing He has you there for a reason. Keep practicing what He is trying to teach you and trust in His timing for moving you on to the next step in your growth process.
