Déjà Vu

For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time – to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:9 (NLT)

Have you ever had déjà vu? If you don’t know what that is, here’s the quick definition: Have you ever had déjà vu? Sorry, couldn’t resist. Déjà vu is living a moment in life that you swore you’ve lived before. For example, you see a white cat run across the street just as a green car drives by. Your brain tells you that you’ve seen this exact scenario (every detail is precisely the same) before. It’s a bit trippy when it happens. It’s as if your brain is telling you that it has seen the future, and now it’s playing out just as it had seen it.

Of course, we can’t predict the future or see exactly how things are going to play out. We can’t even predict exactly what will happen from hour-to-hour, let alone years in the future. Sure, we can make predictions about how things are going to play out, but we’re gonna be wrong a million more times than we’re right.

Unfortunately, we sometimes put this human limitation onto God. We struggle with the belief that God can not only predict the future with 100 percent accuracy, but that He has also seen exactly how it will all play out – down to every detail.

In fact, God’s future-vision is so perfect that He saw you long before you were ever born. In fact, He saw you before He even created the world. What’s even greater than that is that when He saw you, He instantly loved you unconditionally. An unbreakable love was established for you. How strong was this love? Well, our verse today clues us in, “For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time – to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.” In other words, before God built the universe, His mad love for you caused Him to make a decision that would fundamentally alter the course of history. God knew He would die for you.

As Jesus hung on that cross, it wasn’t by accident, or by the power of the haters. Instead, it was déjà vu. God had already seen this all play out. It was His plan all along to lay down His life so that you may have life – eternal life. It was a fulfillment of His desire to show you just how much He loves you.
